Types of Joint Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition of Joint inflammations. Inflammation is the result of body’s response to any kind of disease or injury. More often, inflammation is followed by pain, stiffness and swelling. Arthritis is a condition where inflammation lasts for a long period of time or it recurs as time passes. This can damage the tissues. Hence, Arthritis has to be treated at the very early stage.

The joining point of two or more bones can be termed as joints. The portion where two bones are joining is covered with a spongy and smooth material known as cartilage. Cartilage is the cushion to the bones. It prevents bones from being rubbed, as well as wear and tear. Movement without pain is possible with the help of cartilages.

Synovium, a thin film of tissues nourishes the joint with a slippery fluid by name Synovial fluid. This fluid reduces friction between the bones. Joints are supported by the muscles and tendons thus movement is made possible. Arthritis is a condition where joints become inflamed, pain and stiffness results in difficulty in movement. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. The types of arthritis which affects the joints are mentioned below:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common type of arthritis affecting a large number of people these days. The cartilage covering wears out gradually as one gets old, the person gets affected by Osteoarthritis. The bones rub against each other as a result of the absence of cartilage. This kind of arthritis can affect any joint of the body.

But usually it affects the weight bearing joints like hip, facet joins or joints in the spine and hands. Since this arthritis is a reason for the breakdown and degeneration of cartilage due to old age or excessive use, this Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease.

Gout

This kind of arthritis is extremely painful to the affected person. It occurs when body is unable to eliminate uric acid. Uric acid in excess amount can form into needle-like crystals in the joints, which can be very painful. Swelling too disturbs the affected person. Gout is commonly seen as affecting the knee, big toe and joints of the wrist.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints in any part of the body except lower back. Usually, this disease affects the knees, writs and hands. Severe cases of Rheumatoid arthritis, the parts of the body like skin, eyes, lungs and nerves are affected very badly. Rheumatoid arthritis diffuses inflammation in the lungs, its membranes, membrane around the heart and the white of the eye.
