Many kinds of inflammatory conditions of the bones exist which are becoming common in the world’s population with the progressing years. Such bone diseases condition is known as Ankylosing spondylitis. This type of inflammatory condition of the bones mainly affects the joints of the lower back, that is, the sacroiliac joints.
However, it can affect the entire spine as well as other joints. The cause behind the inflammation of these joints is not clear yet. Ankylosing spondylitis is known to occur more in men as compared to women. Inflammation starts at the point where the ligaments and muscle tendons attach to the bones. As the disease progresses, the affected spinal bones may over grow and fuse. The fusion of bones will lead to stiffness and decreased mobility.
Spondylitis can occur at any age. Juvenile Ankylosing Spondylitis (JAS) is the term used to describe the inflammatory condition of bones in children who are below the age of 16. This kind of inflammatory arthritis (both in adults and in kids) is a systemic disease, that is, it can affect multiple organs. The cause of JAS is unknown. However, those with the disease are suspected to possess a gene HLA-B27.
Symptoms of Spondylitis Arthritis in Children
The stiff and nearly immovable spine as well as other inflammatory conditions of different organs changes the childhood of the affected kid. If even the disease is present in milder form, it can also affect the child’s physical as well as emotional health. Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis are similar in adults as well as in children. Some symptoms of spondylitis arthritis in children are mentioned as under.
Pain is a major symptom of many of the arthritis types as well as other diseases. Pain is likely to occur in those areas, where inflammation develops. Pain is caused in the entire affected spine. It can also be experienced from buttocks and thighs. In the chronic stages of this disease, the pain may also spread up to the shoulder blades and the ribs. Pain in the back becomes severe at night or during rest.
Due to back pain, the child might develop a stooped posture.
Inflammation, besides causing pain, can cause fatigue as well. Children are quite active and early fatigue in them may indicate some underlying disease.
JAS is also likely to produce the symptom of fever.
Weight loss in children can be a symptom of spondylitis.
Loss of Appetite
Another symptom related to spondylitis in children is the reduction of appetite.
Swollen Knees and Ankles
In the initial stages of the disease, children may develop swollen joints of the knees and the ankles.
JAS may also produce a symptom such as inflammation of the eyes, which is characterized by the red and painful eyes of the affected child. The eyes may also become light sensitive.
Affects to Breathing Ability
The ability to take deep breath would be affected if the joints between the ribs and spine are affected. Hence, this can be a symptom of spondylitis arthritis in children.
