Signs & Symptoms Of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis is one form of arthritis. But it generally affects the spine though the condition can spread to other joints also. The problem occurs when the spine joints get inflamed and the patient starts suffering from chronic pain. In worst cases formation of new bone may be noticed.

This results in fusing of the vertebrates and causing immobility. These may be the complications but what are the signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis? Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis are mainly related to the inflammation of the spine and other joints. Some organs may be affected too and that may show up also.

Early Signs of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Initially the person suffering from ankylosing spondylitis shows signs of stiffness and pain, usually in the lower back region and the hips. This is generally noticed when the person spends quite some time in inactivity or after waking from sleep. Moreover, they often disappear for long periods only to recur again. These conditions are sometimes so mild that they are hardly taken as any symptom at all. However, these can develop further and then the person may notice the following symptoms

Pain

In the initial stages of ankylosing spondylitis, a person may notice a blunt pain in the lower back region along with stiffness. This pain may flare up from time to time and last for several days and weeks before subsiding for some period.

Moreover, it may be difficult to pin-point the exact location of the pain. This pain may be noticed in the early hours of the morning, in the later stages of sleep and may last for some time.

Pain

Immobility

The bones of the neck, middle and lower back and the hips may be affected. They may become stiff and hinder normal movement. This stiffness is worst in the morning and may last for more than an hour. Such stiffness and accompanying pain subsides as the person starts increasing his or her physical activities.

Immobility

Fatigue

The people suffering from ankylosing spondylitis often get tired easily. The reason for this is the channeling of energy to fight the inflammation caused by this condition. Moreover, the constant pain and stiffness also contribute to this drainage of energy.\

Fatigue

Inflammation of Eye

This is another of the initial symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis. The white of the eye, the iris, gets inflamed and this condition is called Iritis. The eye pains and shows redness while the person becomes sensitive to light.

Advanced Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

If ankylosing spondylitis gets to the advanced stage, the pain may die away, but the spine gets fused and the person finds difficult to bend. He or she may acquire a permanent forwardly bent posture.

The chance of fracture increases as the flexibility of the spine diminishes considerably. Due to the pressure on chest resulting from the forward-bent posture, the person may experience breathing difficulty. The inflammation of the eye may lead to scarring and permanent damage.

Other Advanced Symptoms

In some cases the inflammation and scarring may even be noticed in the heart valves and muscles leading to improper function of the heart and even heart failure. Irritable bowel syndrome may be noticed. Finally they may even show signs of kidney diseases and problems of the nervous system as these may get affected too.
