Much of the pain in the joints of the leg are present at knee region. The reference pain extend from ankle towards the hip. The referred pain usually ends up in another place while the injury occurs at one place. One of the joints in the body is the knee which helps the leg to remain stable in the upright standing position. It also allows the leg to go in a particular direction.
The knee is susceptible to most of the injuries that will destroy the cartilage or ligaments that are present around the knee. This destruction of ligaments surrounding the knee will lead to joint pain in the leg. There are a few kinds of leg joint pain that affect the people. They are mentioned under.
Causes Of Leg Joint Pain
Patellar Tendinitis or Runner’s Knee
There are two inflammation types that can affect the people who do running and jogging. This inflammation leads to the Runner’s knee. One type of Runner’s knee occurs when the fibrous band or ilio-tibial tract running from muscles of buttock to the tibia is swollen. The tendon that attaches the shin to the kneecap which is called as patella gets swollen and leads to the condition called as Runner’s knee.
In this condition, the back side of the patella that is damaged will result in pain at the back of the knee cap. Chondromalacia patellae is the condition which normally occurs in the teenage or young adult stage or frequently occurs in girls.
As per a publication by the US national Library of Medicine, Chondromalacia patellae is caused when the patella slopes in an abnormal angle. The tilting might have resulted due to imbalance of the muscle surrounding the knee.
Bursae are the sacs that are filled with fluid and these sacs are present around the knee. These bursae are swollen due to the repeated pressure, knee blows and strain. The knee front part will experience bursitis in wrestlers due to the pressure that is present in the knees.
If the knee is injured very often then it might lead to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by swelling, pain and joint stiffness. Osteoarthritis occurs because the destruction of cartilage that outline the joint lead to the bony growths.
As per the University Of Maryland Medical Center, the knee with osteoarthritis will be more painful. The advanced stages of this condition might lead to unstable knee due to inflammation.
Damage to The Ligament
The ligament of the knee will often get damaged commonly in sports. The medial ligament will get damaged more often than the lateral ligament while damage to the cruciate ligament is considered as occurring very commonly compared to others. The knee becomes swollen, tender and painful even due to some small strain. The regions above and below the knee might experience from referred pain. If there is any breach in the medial and cruciate ligaments, the knee might become unstable and might need a surgery.
The joints as well as the surrounding tissues are inflamed in this condition. Rheumatoid arthritis can be a hereditary condition which occurs in people aged 40 years and more. Most of the women are susceptible to this disease. Rheumatoid arthritis will lead to swelling, pain and reddishness of the joints. The destruction of bone and cartilage might lead to deformities in the joints.
