Signs & Symptoms of Arthritis in the Feet

Pain (Mild to Severe)

An individual may experience mild to severe pain in the different parts of the feet (such as toes and heels) as a result of joint inflammation caused by an injury or wear and tear due to aging. In some cases, it may become impossible for an individual to move or stand properly.

While osteoarthritis may result in pain in one foot, rheumatoid arthritis may affect both the feet. Further, rheumatoid arthritis may also result in fever, fatigue and weight loss. Therefore, pain can be considered as one of the primary symptoms of arthritis in the feet.

Swelling

Another common symptom of arthritis in the feet is swelling. Swelling can be considered as one of the most visible symptoms of arthritis in the feet. Swelling is caused by an increase in the supply of blood to the feet as a result of inflammation of the joints.

An individual suffering from the problem of rheumatoid arthritis may also experience swelling in the feet. It may become difficult for an individual to wear shoes as a result of swelling in the feet. In extreme cases, an individual may find it difficult to move the feet properly.

Swelling

Stiffness

A feeling of numbness may be felt as a result of arthritis in the feet. This feeling is termed as stiffness. It is interesting to note that stiffness may or may not be accompanied with pain in the feet. It is not essential that every individual suffering from arthritis in the feet may experience this symptom. Further, it is also possible that stiffness may be experienced only in the morning.

Stiffness

Heat and Redness

In some cases, an individual suffering from arthritis in the feet may experience a feeling of heat. Inflammation and growth in the number of blood vessels in the affected foot are the main reasons for this symptom. Redness of the affected area is another symptom associated with arthritis in the feet.

An individual suffering from gout (which is a common form of arthritis) may experience these two symptoms in his/her big toe. It is interesting to note that these two symptoms generally disappear as the problem of arthritis in the feet is cured with the use of different treatments.
