It is an idiopathic pain and inflammation of muscles. The exact causes behind this condition are not conclusively understood but are believed to be caused by auto immune reaction of the body and certain viruses. People suffering from cancer are known to be at a higher risk of Polymyositis because the body’s immunity system gets into an overdrive while destroying the cancerous cells.

It is a rare disease and usually affects the skeletal muscles of entire body. This disease also inflicts the women more than the men. It majorly affects people in the age group of over 50 years. This feature deals with various signs and symptoms associated with Polymyositis.

Painful Muscles

This is a systemic disease and causes inflammation of muscles throughout the body. The pain and inflammation may also cause swelling in some parts. Though this disease can inflict any part of the body but has been widely observed to have begun in the hips and shoulders.

Muscle Pain

There is muscle loss and wastage in this condition which worsens the muscular pain further. The muscular weakness may also result in repeated and frequent injury as the body gets prone to falls and imbalance.

Difficulties Related To Throat

Our neck and throat have a covering of muscles. With the muscular weakness of Polymyositis, there might be a change in the heaviness and tone of voice if the muscles of larynx are affected. Oesophageal muscles help in passing the food through the food pipe to stomach, however if the muscle fibre of this organ gets affected then you may also experience difficulty in swallowing and in severe cases one may have to resort to a liquid and soft diet temporarily and permanently.

There may be difficulty in simple movements like lifting weights, hands especially when it requires the use of shoulder muscles. Easy changes in postures like standing up after a ling time of sitting or vice versa may become an uphill task for you. The profound weakness of muscles may lead to limitation of the functionality of some parts of the body.
