5 Symptoms Of Neonatal Lupus

Neonatal Lupus

Neonatal Lupus

It is a medical condition occurring in infants at the time of birth or develops within one to two months after the birth. If the mother is suffering from the symptoms of Lupus erythematosus or Sjogren’s syndrome then the baby is likely to develop this condition from the mother.

It is a rare condition and may even occur in the babies whose mother do not show any symptoms of lupus. In some babies lupus can lead to very serious complications, some of which can even prove to be fatal. In this article we will discuss various symptoms of Neonatal lupus which will make the mothers and expectant mothers more aware and alert of this condition.

Symptoms Of Neonatal Lupus

Skin Problems

Children suffering from this condition may develop a characteristic lesions and rashes on the skin. The common areas of this eruption are neck, scalp and cheeks of the baby. However, it is  not strictly limited to these areas and may appear on other body regions as well.

Skin Problems

These skin eruptions are reddish and flaky in appearance. These lesions appear around eyes as well giving eyes an owl like appearance. Early diagnosis can make this skin condition disappear on its own in 1-2 months.

Liver And Kidney Disease

Many babies suffering from neonatal lupus develop liver and kidney conditions. Since lupus is an auto immune disease, the inflammation in the body can make the level of impurities in the blood high. Purification of such blood can cause kidney diseases. Liver disease is a little uncommon compared to kidney condition. The diagnosis of kidney condition is done by urine test which may have darker colour and show high level of protein discharge.

Kidney Disease

Brittle Nails

This condition can make the nails fragile and skin around the nails may be worn off. These may look dry, flaky and easily tear off. The nails may look puffy and have swelling in the finger tips. This happens due to inflammation of the blood vessels under the nail bed.

Brittle Nails

The nails also show red or purple tinge. The hands may also become numb and tingly though the baby will not be able to express this sensation but simple change in colour of finger and hands to pale white or blue will indicate lupus.

Cardiac And Lungs Disease

This condition leads to clogging of arteries with plaque leading into heart. This increases the pressure on the cardiovascular system. On the other hand the sac surrounding the heart may show signs of inflammation and cause cardiac failure. The usual symptoms of cardiac disease will reflect as pain in the chest and persistent fatigue due to lower efficiency of heart in pumping the blood. In the same way, lungs may also get inflamed and the babies show heavy painful breathing.

Lungs Disease

Sensitivity To Sunlight

Babies may show extraordinary sensitivity to sun light. It is believed that the ultraviolet rays affect the skin of babies adversely. The sunlight may cause skin rashes and lesions even on short exposure. Not only is the sunlight bad for the skin of lupus suffering children but may also worsen the other symptoms of lupus.
